Green Is So Green

It’s a beautiful reckoning

To find comfort in this skin

As sunlight embraces me

No longer hiding the parts

I was afraid to see

The bruises have faded

But the scars remain

And every time you said

It would be different

It was always the same

My strength hibernated

With that Winter

As the distance

Between us grew thinner

Love was just a four letter word

You used to possess me and

Your cries to harm yourself

Were to silence mine of help

Like dead trees

Creating new leaves

That Spring

Taught me

Everything

How to rebuild

From the rubble

Bask in the light

Believe in myself to

Grow wild and free.

Urge

Always in the same dark place

Leaving town without a trace

Tell me more sweet lies

Searching for alibis

Hold me close

To let me know

All the things

You can’t let go

Swimming in your blissful sea

Drowning in your misery

Always causing such scene

Attempting to sell your dream

Full of hope and they see

The twisted reality

Chemical reaction

Fatal attraction

Caught in your undertow

Unable to let go

I can feel the urge

Come on again

I see you laughing

With that wicked grin

Tear down your walls

And let me back in

I can feel the urge

Come on again

Say you’ll be mine

Oh it hurts less each time

Pretend I’m free

Dopamine dream

St.Louis Cemetery No.1

Vetiver and oak moss

Lure you down the dark streets

The sweet taste of licorice

Dances on your tongue

The green fairy bewitches you

As you slowly come undone

Passing Marie Laveau’s tomb

And all the ancient stones

Observing all the signs and

Knowing there is more

Than you will ever find

The future may crumble

But the past will never fall

It’s rich in the blood

That has been sacrificed

And pulses in the

Music that dances

Through these halls

Secret gardens strung

With jasmine and wisteria

Lingering in the air

You run towards

The Mississippi River and

Your reflection finds you there

Glistening from the summer heat

The moonlight dances off your skin

I’m certain I’ve been here before

And I never want to leave again...

Therapy

I know this track

Like I know my body

The places to avoid

To not trigger

The land mines

Around me

The cracks and scars

That remain in the asphalt

The fact that my story

Is not unique

So many have come before

And will come after me

The reason at 15

I used shame

To layer my body

After confiding in a friend

Who questioned my integrity

Trying not to be seen

I would harm myself

Thinking how

I was too weak

To protect me

Don’t reveal too much skin

Never walk alone at night

Don’t let your drink out of sight

Carry your keys like a knife

This mantra is memorized

While our bodies are desired

And weaponized

Will this war ever end?

The Art of Pyrography

I remember the hazy sun

How it filtered through the

Thrift store curtains

The billows of incense smoke

Held by freshly stained wood

That swirled through the rooms

Of laughter

Mostly

Screaming

Sometimes

The sun would catch you

At just the right moment

All your stress and worry

Evaporated

With the music

That always welcomed you home

Your gauzy skirt

With rainbow metallic threads

Caught the light

As you danced around the room

Forgetting your long

Nights of working doubles

Just to barely get by

The two children

That were always hungry

And begging for your attention

Would stop in their tracks

And watch you in awe

Stunned by your beauty

But most importantly

Your freedom.

Amelioration

I gathered pine needles

Under the new moon

Boiling them to

Cleanse every

Threshold I cross

I eat oranges and

Dream of sunshine

Aspiring to be more

Like my houseplants

Who have mastered

Basking in just

The right amount

Of light

Before the darkness

Creeps in

Lush in chlorophyll

Absorbing all the

Minerals and water

I bestow upon them

I anoint my knees

With rose oil

Kissing each one

Whilst thanking

Them for saving me

I marvel

At how my body

Moves

Heals

Loves

And no longer

Shrinks and cowers

In existence

If love is a red door

Then I want in

For the protection

It brings and

The message

It sends...

Legs

These legs

Have crawled

Trained in ballet

To learn to walk

Without falling

Worn braces

To correct

My pigeon-toed feet

(That I still choose

As my comfort stance)

Grew too fast

Leaving me

Awkward as a child but

Balanced as a woman

They danced in clubs till 4AM

Wrapped around lovers

Swam in oceans

Climbed mountains

Waited on tables

Roller skated till dawn

Cycled thousands of miles

Awoken me at 3AM

Writhing with spasms

Through two

Nine month

Pregnancies

Have carried

My children

Upon hips

That always

Need adjusting

They have allowed me to shimmy

Until my soul was content

Helped me run my first

And last 5k

(Because I hate running)

Have been

Bruised

Scarred

And

Tattooed

With

Love and hate equally

Always

Restless and ready

For the adventure

That lies ahead.
