The Day Before

The day before you

Died

Was a spring day in

Winter

I walked to see the sunset

Still in my blue halter dress

My skin red from the

Sun

I was too eager

Begging for its

Warmth

On my pale skin

An old silver Lincoln

With suicide doors

Drove by

Don’t Dream it’s over

Drifting

From the stereo

Holding me like

Like a child

That still believed

In hope

I wish I could have

Stayed in that moment

Forever.

Light As A Feather

I just need

A soft place

To land

The world

Is hard enough

I’ve been gathering

feathers

With these hands

Hoping it will be

Enough

I tremble under

The Cold moon

Another year

About to turn

Have I lost

All direction

Where can I

Return

I’m restless

I wander

Lost in this maze

Pining

For a place

To rest

Because I haven’t

Slept in days

I want more

Than just the scraps

Of 2024

Fuck the fear

Of this year

And the constant worry

Of those I hold dear

Survival mode

Is overrated

My adrenal glands

Are exasperated

I should not

Have to work so hard

To be able to rest

My heart is a hammer

Bruising my chest

Reminding myself

To breathe in fully

And to release

All

That

Is

No

Longer

Fucking

Serving

Me.

Testify

Thunder rolling

The clouds gather

Emerge from the ocean

To settle the score

You tried to

Divide us and

Steal our power

But that will happen

No more

Scream so much

That you can’t hear

It is time to testify

Fuel the rage

Behind your tears

It is time to testify

Exhausted from the fight

Still can’t sleep at night

Exhausted from the fight

But it’s time to make things right

I’ve given so much but

I’m still gonna give you more

I’ll never tire because

I know what I’m fighting for.

Shades of Blue

Why do I wait for

Crumbs

When all I want to do is

Devour

Why do I stay

Silent

Choking on words

I need to spit out

Just wading in

The shallow end

Of my doubt

I’m ready to dive

Deeper

Than I ever have

Before

I’ve given you the keys

Still

You won’t unlock

The door.

Horizon

Change is happening

Everywhere

You can feel it

In the air

The rising tide

The ebb and flow

Finding ways

To let it go

Horizon meets

The bluest sky

The waves come crashing

Building/cresting

Carry me out to sea

Time and space

Have no relevance

Your internal

Compass

Cease to exist

The stars will guide

Your way back home

Trust the wind to

Carry you on

Cleanse my soul

With the salt air

Until my heart

No longer cares

About all that

Tethers me to land

Lost at sea

And whole again.

Cumulonimbus

The crepe myrtles

Are heavy with rain

Crying

Bright blossoms

For me to walk upon

My hair still taste

Of salt from the ocean

When just yesterday

I felt at home and

Weightless

In her arms

I wrap myself

In my dad’s old shirt

Wearing it like armour

Knowing that soon

I will be fighting

The heaviness

That is lurking

Just

Around

The

Corner.

Water and Sand

 Teach me

To savor each moment

And be able to let go

Lingering in the

Beauty of the past

Is killing me slow

I want to stand

At each threshold

Eyes open wide

Present and alive

Willing to risk it all

Not fearing the fall

Madly in love

With each

Breath

Kiss

Scar

Tear

Touch

Word

Wound

Laugh

The future is

Water and sand

The more I try to

Grasp it

The faster

It slips

Between my hands.

Moonbeams

The flower moon
Found me, a wilted mess
Wrung out and wrinkled
Like my torn party dress
Getting lost in
Nostalgic corridors
Clouding visions
Of what I’m here for
The suffering has
Always come easy
I’ve grown tired
Of fighting joy
I want to surrender
Letting it
Carry me
Triumphantly
Through the darkness
That tries to envelop me
I am ready to receive
 My flowers now.

Wisteria

 Wrapped in wisteria

Wounded by dreams

There are so many

Moments that I wish

Could be unseen

These spring

Fevered dreams

That keep me

Awake at night and

Anxiety filled days

That constantly ask

Am I doing

This right?

When the voice

Of reason

Left

Long ago

And your

Aching

For something

But

What it is

You don’t know.

Flowering Hope

 My ground is covered

With sweet gum balls

My bare feet hate stepping on them and

I know my neighbors wish they were gone

However

The Goldfinches

Carolina chickadees and

Carolina wrens

Thank me with song

The sun is returning more each day

Chasing the darkness and my blues away

I run to bask in the rays of light

Screaming

As each gum ball pierces my skin

Smiling

As I stumble upon my daffodils

The harbingers of spring

Drenched and bent like

Horns

In all their golden glory.

July

With the sweetness of June still on my lips

Begging and pleading, is that all there is?

July came and left like a fever dream

I can’t even recognize the version that is currently me

The salt runs down my cheeks

Instead of the ocean that used to cleanse me &

I have never felt so landlocked while being lost at sea.

Threshold

It’s the last days of August

I’ve been given thunderstorms

To soothe this Florida soul of mine

Two full moons to harvest intentions

That I have slept on

For far too long

A train trestle that crosses

The Savannah river

Beckoning me to follow

A suffocating heat

That takes my breath away

Whilst begging me to stay

As I step into September

Shaking off the ghosts.

October:

 October

I am ready

Fuck this

Complacency

The gnawing

Doubts

That rob me

I have left ashes

In my wake

Burning

What no longer

Serves me

To become

The woman

I desire to be

Honing myself

For this reality.

L is for:

Walking the moonlit street

I said to you

Coming home

Doesn’t hurt like it used to

Confessions in the

Red room of The Saint

How we learned to swallow

Our ghosts

Before they devoured us whole

Knowing we wouldn’t change

A second

Because it brought us here

And isn’t that

The beauty in the pain

That we now know

Living

Is so much more than just

Surviving.❤️

You Look Tired

Hope

Is a dangerous thing

Balancing

On gnashed teeth

The let downs hit harder

Than they used to

As time slips

Away faster than

I want to

The distance

Between where I am

And where I’ve been

Takes constant

Momentum

While

My blues and anxiety

Train daily

In an attempt

To outrun me.

Presence

I am filled with

Flowers and gratitude

That my limbs

Love me enough

To inspire movement

That my lungs

Know how much

Air I require

To be thankful

For every breath

That my heart

Loves the challenge

Of beating

Just

A

Little

Faster…

Something to Believe

Dressing for that

Sunny disposition

That always seems

To escape me

I will find a cloud

To get lost in and

Dig up all

My painful memories

How do others move on

While I stand still?

Analyzing the wreckage

Has gotten me nowhere

How does a heart

That’s been betrayed

Heal?

How can you

Reach inside to find

The wound

Whispering

I promise

You’ll be safe here.

Wounds

These wounds they say

That make us stronger

What do they do

In between

The rawness &

The scar tissue

How do we carry

Around

This aching flesh

Protecting it

From a world

That wants

To tear it apart

How do some of us

Recover

And others get

Consumed

What does survival

Look like to you?

Static

 I have never

Had a winter

So surrounded

By death

I should be

Thankful

For each

And every

Fucking

Breath

Still

I’m frozen

In memories

Of the past

Afraid to hold on

To anything too

Tightly

As the waves of grief

Ebb and flow

I feel tied

To an anchor

Unable to

Let go.

Is that all there is:

I’m filing a nail that has been

Jagged for over 2 weeks now

I’m choosing to ride my bike

In the sunshine

Instead of doing the

Laundry and vacuuming

Like I should

Because

I leave for work in the dark

I come home in the dark

And I feel my life

Painfully

Passing me by

As I am just trying

To fucking

Survive

Winter always

Brings a heavy

Blanket of grief

And no time to

Process and rest

My aching bones

Beneath.
